Ms. Xiao, 26, who works as a supermarket manager, is one of a growing number of women experimenting with China’s newest, and most controversial, fitness activity: pole dancing.

When an American colleague said that she was going to take a class in pole-dancing as a way to keep fit, I thought she was joking. I couldn’t believe that they actually had a exer-pole class so I bet her that if she took the class I would take it with her. When she showed me the website to the spot that she was talking about I was incredulous. Needless to say, I quickly backed out of my prior bet. That was about three months ago. Today, that same colleague, knowing that I am interested in China, sent me the link to the following article. Again, I was incredulous and even more so because of all places it’s blowing up in Beijing. While, I doubt that it is as pervasive as the article makes it out to be, just the fact that it’s available is enough for me to scratch my head. Amazing!
