Lucy Fairbrother, 23, and Iain Thom, 24, were detained on Tuesday along with two US activists near the stadium where Friday's opening ceremony will take place. All four are members of the international Students for a Free Tibet group … She [the executive director of Students for a Free Tibet] confirmed further protests are likely during the games. “There will certainly be people of conscience who will try to speak out in peaceful ways while the world spotlight is on China.”
Foreigners protesting in Beijing. Now that’s a totally new twist on the Olympics that I frankly didn’t think was possible. I didn’t think anyone would be willing to try. Looks like I’m wrong and more importantly it looks like a whole new barrel of headaches for the Chinese leadership. Obviously, they can arrest and deport foreign protesters but with the whole world watching there isn’t much more they’d be able to do than that. Moreover, being that most authorities probably won’t be able to tell when a protest will start amongst a group of foreigners, it will be nearly impossible to stop at least in the initial phases (read: the unfurling of a flag or sign at the most opportune time). This will make watching the Beijing scene almost as interesting as watching the sports events. Stay tuned.
Mystery of the bowdlerised blog as Beijing frees four after Tibet protest.
They just want to be a ‘hero’ by protesting. How much do they know about Tibet? Do they know how dark the Dailai Lama’s period in Tibet?! Do they know the slavery system in Tibet 60 years ago?! Not any meaning to Chinese by doing so. Just like annoying flies.
