Inspired by the “color revolution” that installed Barack Obama as president of the United States, the January issue of the men’s lifestyle magazine Mangazine is all about “Black Power.”

Although, as the post points out, the coverage may be a bit spotty (and I can’t tell for sure as I have not got an actual copy yet) in my opinion that is to be expected considering that it’s a Chinese guy lifestyle magazine covering what must be a wholly unfamiliar subject but I do find it a positive trend (can we call this a true example of the “Obama Effect”), just for the fact that it was published at all. I sure would like to get a copy of it and will be on the look out to see if there are any follow up moves in Chinese media in the days to come. (hat tip to the Working Unit aka Danwei for the pointer)

Black power in a Chinese men’s magazine

  1. Despite how danwei portrayed the coverage of the magazine, I thought it was quite good. It focuses on the US but covers some international people. I’m not sure why danwei would mention there is no coverage of blacks in China seeing as they focused on things outside of China but the concept was cool.

  2. The current issue of Modern Weekly has a similar feature. It’s not a themed issue like the Mangazine was, but the piece did make the cover.
