A “cyber cold war” is developing as international web espionage and cyber-attacks become the biggest threats to internet security *** the Chinese were the first to jump “feet first” into 21st-century cyber-warfare technology.

China’s strategy actually makes sense. Since it would take years or decades, in order for it to modernize its conventional military to the level of the US, Russia, England or France, China would always be playing catch up. However with everyone’s growing reliance on the Internet and advanced telecommunication combined with the fact that we are all in this at the ground floor, China, if they play their cards right, can achieve superpower status from a cyber-military perspective ahead of anyone else and thereby set the terms. (A World policeman other than the US?) Moreover, China’s focus on tech development and the fact that it is graduating more engineers then any other nation gives it a comparative advantage in pushing the envelop and jumping ahead. With our focus on fighting two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan my guess is that the powers that be here in the US are not being as aggressive as China in developing out cyber-military status. I just hope that doesn’t come back to bite us in our cyber-behind.
