The Internet giant Yahoo provided information that helped Chinese state security officials convict a Chinese journalist [Shi Tao] for leaking state secrets to a foreign Web site. Using investigative techniques that were not revealed during Shi’s trial, Beijing state security officials pinpointed the Chinese source of the e-mail to Democracy Forum that contained the information, according to the people involved in Shi’s defense.
Yahoo! knows which side the bread is buttered and as I posted a couple of days back…US companies dealing with China have to navigate corruption, nepotism, favorism and thuggery (read: CCP pressures to divulge needed info.) Stil, we all know that business needs to make a profit but sometimes taking that moral stand in the face of pressure is not only the right thing to do but if played right can do wonders for that bottom line.
Yahoo’s take, which is here, Internet giant Yahoo Inc. defended itself on Thursday against accusations that it supplied data to Chinese authorities which led to the imprisonment of a journalist, saying it has to abide local laws.
Lame!…anyone who has done some business in China knows that all “laws” can massaged…to say they gave up info because they are upright citizens is a cop-out.
