The film, about the struggle of a communist captain Zhang Hanyu to commemorate his fallen colleagues after a series of bloody battles in 1948-49, was drawn from a Yang Jingyuan short story.

Illustrations of how the World is growing smaller are becoming more evident everyday (cheers to globalization.) Nowhere is that more evident then in the cross-pollination of movies-music and TV. Case in point is Feng Xiaogang’s recent war movie Assembly. While telling a uniquely Chinese story borrows heavily by way of cinematography from Saving Private Ryan. This is a great flick, well worth seeing (it has English subtitles for the non-Chinese speakers).
